Twentieth century science and Marx's 'historical materialism' are each, both an account of, but equally, the practical expression of, a single proposal of impeccable credentials (ASPIC) the new singularity! This single proposal is to historicism and a universal theory of nature and human being, what the stem-cell is to the human body. Without it 20th century sceince could not have arisen--without it human being could not have appeared, and unless it were true, nature would have been impossible. It is only because it is true therefore, that we are possible! Natural and social science are not two species apart but two sides of the same coin, therefore, with a common source as in the dialectic (or equivalence) of quantity cum energy (cum price as exchange value), and quality cum mass, (cum usefulness as brass, copper and the like, as use value). We suffer and enjoy the dialectic of real existence and Marx and Einstein are responsible for exposing its nature and its history in a way no other basis could ever match. Hamish's further reasoning is not original, but it is utterly foreign to Western thinking during most of its history so that Western history was mis-understood and portrayed as per an echo of The Holy Book, i.e. as a completed, fixed and unchangable totality, (ontology so-called, the antithesis of history). Since ontology is only half of the story, nothing could be more misleading than to present a fixed account of something changing 'as if' it were the whole of it! Newton, Descartes, Hobbes, Rousseau, Smith, Darwin, Marx, Einstein, Freud, Crick and Watson . . . we have arrived at another such, even more spectacular juncture than all the rest put together because that exactly is what it is.
